WHAT PEOPLE ASK
Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers about ombuds services, mediation, coaching, confidentiality,
and how Truth Arc can help.
What is an ombuds, and how is it different from HR or legal?
▼
An ombuds is an independent, neutral, confidential, and informal resource. Unlike HR or legal, the ombuds does not act on behalf of the organization, take sides, or participate in formal processes. The role is to help visitors understand their options, prepare for conversations, and find resolution — without creating a record that triggers institutional action.
Is everything I say to an ombuds confidential?
▼
Yes. Confidentiality is a core standard of ombuds practice. An ombuds will not disclose your identity or the content of your conversation without your permission, except in rare cases where required by law or to prevent imminent risk of serious harm. This is what makes the office safe to use before you know what you want to do.
Can an ombuds help if I am not sure whether to file a formal complaint?
▼
Absolutely. Many people reach out precisely because they are unsure. The ombuds can help you think through your concerns, understand the options available to you, and decide what — if anything — you want to do next. You do not have to commit to any formal process to speak with an ombuds.
What happens in a mediation session?
▼
Mediation is a structured, voluntary conversation facilitated by a neutral third party. The mediator does not decide who is right or wrong. Instead, they help both parties communicate clearly, identify shared interests, and explore solutions they can both accept. Sessions are confidential, and either party can end the process at any time.
How does coaching fit with ombuds and mediation?
▼
Coaching is one-to-one support that helps you build skills, confidence, and clarity around conflict, communication, or leadership. It complements ombuds and mediation by preparing you to handle difficult situations more effectively — whether or not you ever enter a formal process.
Can my organization hire Truth Arc for an external ombuds function?
▼
Yes. We provide external ombuds services on a retainer or project basis, as well as interim coverage while an internal office is being established. We can also advise on structure, standards, and reporting lines to ensure the function is genuinely independent.
Do you offer training for teams and leadership?
▼
Yes. We run workshops and training programs on difficult conversations, mediation skills, psychological safety, and respectful workplaces. Sessions can be delivered in-person or online, and tailored to your organization's context and experience level.
